Güell commissioned Gaudí to design the landscape and public spaces for what was to be Barcelona's new garden city. The designs became so fantastical that not many of the house plots were sold, and so it became a public park. It is now one of the city's greatest treasures.

I don't know if our early ancestors, when seeking relief, had such fine experiences in their primeval living quarters -- but this grotto WC was certainly a convenient retreat.

The modern 'lava trees' found in this cave -- both male and female -- drip with Guadian stalactites. Unexpected and definitely worth crossing your legs for, especially if you're desperately holding on.

Find them near the outdoor cafe, next to the Pl. de Naturalesa.
