Las Ramblas,
Pl. des Catalunya
Originally a river bed, Las Ramblas takes its name from the Arabic word 'ramla'. The tree lined promenade is an obligatory walk and the mile long stream of people provides a carefree means to acclimatize and fit into the ebb and flow of the city. There are five different sections to stroll through, ending at the sea, with the Columbus Monument.

At the top of La Rambla Canaletes an ageing population sit fast, accessorised with stick or weighty handbag, ready to pass judgement and take on the world in conversation. Each seat is fixed in an unusual scatter of groups, enabling the regular gathering for a meeting of minds, or 'tertulia' as it is known in Catalan. Take a pew if you dare rise to the challenge of those so wise and experienced in hard seated banter.
