The rebirth of this beautiful city, begun so fervently in the 1980s, has knowingly made use of art as a catalyst made accessible to everyone. So much so, that Barcelona’s public sculpture programme is now the largest of its kind in any Western city.

As the parks, squares, streets and buildings have been re-invigorated right across the city, new artworks have formed the very life-blood of these improvements. Much of this work is excitingly contemporary in spirit -- Barcelona having lost interest in traditional ‘monuments’ following those imposed on it during the Franco era. It’s also widely international, with many famous artists –most of whom accepted reduced fees -- representing all corners of the world.

What follows is only a handful of exhibits from this vast and vibrant gallery. It’s a personal pick that doesn’t intend to reflect only the best… Barcelona’s streets are stacked with surprises, and you’ll find internationally significant works as much in the outlying districts as in the city centre. Take these as a starting point, then go out and explore…
